Today we witnessed a deadly massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Twenty innocent children shot to death, along with 6 other adults. The gunman then took his own life. When tragedy like this takes place many people have questions. The most common is, “Why?” Why does this sort of thing happen? Where is God in all of this? Could this have been avoided? And, how do we prevent this from happening again?
Let me first say that there are natural solutions and spiritual. Both are important! Some of the natural solutions may be a look into stricter gun control, counseling, and more education on detecting signs that someone is on the verge of hurting people. In the days to come you will hear a lot of debate as to what needs to happen now. Some will be politically charged and some will be from a pure heart to see this kind of heinous violence come to an end. But rest assured, after a few days the news cycle will turn and people will get back to their ‘normal’ lives. Sadly, we probably won’t be any closer to getting answers that we so desperately need.
Let me offer a spiritual angle. First, God is not to blame! Most people would agree with that but are still left with the thought of if God is in control why doesn’t He stop it from happening! Why does He allow this sort of thing to go on?
The Bible states clearly that gross darkness will cover the earth (Isaiah 60:2). It also states that because of increase in wickedness the love of the world will grow cold (Matthew 24:12). Lastly, Jesus states that Satan is in this world for the sole purpose of killing, stealing, and destroying (John 10:10). It may have been a joke at one time but not everyone who says, “The devil made me do it” is lying. Some people are demonically influenced, seduced, and deceived to the point of hurting innocent people.
I don’t know the state of the individual who carried out this horrific act. I can’t state that he was demon possessed. What I do know is that from a broader picture the spirit of violence and a depreciation of God’s most precious creation (humanity) has been unleashed. It should sadden us but it shouldn’t shock us.
Today I not only prayed for the families that were effected I prayed that we all would be more spiritually sensitive to God’s voice. I prayed that more believers would be alarmed by the Spirit before danger like this occurs. It’s my personal desire that I would be in tuned so that if danger is lurking God would use me and others to help avert a tragedy.
As much as this day is filled with sorrow, we must remind ourselves of the many stories that don’t hit the headlines showing God’s mercy. Many can attest to moments of sovereign intervention, healing miracles, supernatural protection and preservation. I want to encourage you as a fellow believer, trust God as your protector. Believe Him to preserve your children. Don’t allow the spirit of fear to grab hold of you! We live in a crazy world and a lot of crazy things will happen. But in the midst of it all God’s love and goodness remains!
