In my last post (Ever get that feeling…) I shared how the Lord speaks to us by way of impressions in our spirit. But is it possible for the Lord to speak to us with more than feelings and impressions? Absolutely! In 1 Kings 19:11-13 there’s an account of how God spoke to Elijah through what is described as a ‘still small voice’. That’s right, God uses His voice too!
A still small voice is sort of like a whisper. It’s when you hear an actual voice with your physical ears or it can be words you hear in your spirit.
Last year my brother shared a remarkable story with me of how he heard the voice of God. It was a hot summer day and his wife asked if he would run some errands for her. He obliged and got in his car and started to pick up a few things for the house. As the day went on he got hungry and so decided to stop at a McDonald’s Drive-thru to order some food. After pulling up to the window to pay and receive his food he was about to pull off but then heard a voice say, “It’s in reverse”. He was immediately startled. The voice was so clear and sounded as if the person who said it was sitting in the back seat of the car. He was confused because no one was in the car with him. He looked around the car and no one was there. He looked behind the car and no one was standing there either. He looked down at the gears and then saw that his car was in the reverse position. There were cars directly behind his car and had he pulled off he would have had an accident. The voice wasn’t a shout; it was a still small voice, heard audibly with his natural ears.
Maybe you can’t think of a time you heard God’s voice with your natural ears. However perhaps you can think of a time you heard a voice in your spirit. Sometimes after praying if you remain quiet in the Lord’s presence you will start to hear God’s voice speak to you. At times you may hear words that sound like a soft whisper of some sort. You may think it’s your own voice or your mind but I’m willing to bet that oftentimes it’s the voice of the Lord.
What if I’m not sure if it’s God’s voice?
If you are uncertain if it’s the voice of the Lord all you need to do is ask the Lord. Sometimes I think I am hearing God’s voice but I’m not 100% sure. When that happens I’ll just ask the Lord about it. I’ll say something like, “Lord, I believe I heard you say this or that. Can you confirm if in fact I’m hearing you right?” Often as soon as I ask Him I’ll hear the same words or then the Lord will give me an impression that signals to me that I heard right. The worse thing we can do is think the Lord is speaking to us, not be sure about it, and then not say anything to Him about it. Don’t shrug it off; just ask Him about it. He is always willing to confirm. If after asking you don’t hear those words again or you don’t sense an impression getting stronger and stronger, it may not be the Lord. Nevertheless if you hear those words again and you start feeling a strong impression in your heart, it is the Lord confirming what you heard.
I often hear the voice of God as soon as I awake in the morning. I’ve heard many other people say the same thing. I believe there is something to that. Perhaps when we awake in the morning our minds are not as congested and our spirits are a lot more sensitive to hear. Either way, if you hear words, a statement or sentence that just seemed to amplify in your spirit, it may be the voice of God speaking to you.
If you can think of a time you heard God’s voice whisper in your spirit or natural ears I’d love to hear about it. Please share with me!
Praying for you always,
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13
