The beginning of wisdom

“The fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

This is a verse I heard many times when I started in the faith but it took me a while to understand its meaning. To fear The Lord is to have a reverence for Him. Revering Him translates into regarding His thoughts, words, and desires; not only taking them into consideration but esteeming them above our own.

Why is having this attitude the beginning of wisdom? Why is elevating Gods desires above ours and all else the point at which wisdom can flourish? Because The Lord is the very source of wisdom. So if you defer to and take your cues from that source, you will be building your life on a foundation of wisdom. As I wrote in Trusting God’s Word To You, it will all start with you seeing His wisdom as righteous and void of any wickedness or corruption. When we regard His wisdom and His counsel above all else, we are free to grow in that wisdom.

Love,

Ernst
