“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
Lately, I feel the Lord impressing on me how important friends are. I personally haven’t heard a lot of sermons about friendship. I’ve heard and preached a lot on marriage relationships, courtship, and family relationships in general. But what about friendships? TLC wrote a song called “What about your friends“. The song talks about the ups and downs and uncertainty of friendships. But Proverbs 17 says something different:
“A friend loves at all times…”
Do you love your friends at all times? Do you show relentless commitment to them even when they are not being the best of friends to you? For one reason or another, people will go through different seasons. They may sometimes grow distant, be less committed, or even act a little cranky with you. But how do you respond in those moments? That will be the test of your friendship.
The verse also says that a brother is born for a time of adversity. God has placed people in your life not only to share the joys but also to help you in times of adversity. Friendships and family relationships are a big deal and we shouldn’t take them for granted. Instead, we should cultivate them.
Are there friendships that you have neglected? Today would be a great day to pick up the phone (no texting) and reach out. Tell them you value their friendship and make plans to intentionally invest in it.
