Only the best

“Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.” Proverbs 22:29

If there is one thing I’d like you to embrace today from Proverbs 22 it would be the value of excellence. Excelling is not only getting better but going beyond average. The promise we see in this verse is that the person who excels will not stand before unknown men but will instead be brought before great and influential people.

So what is it that you do? Are you a student, a career woman or man, a business owner or performer of some sort? Whatever you do, commit to being great at it. Don’t settle for average; don’t settle for just good enough. This is one of the ways we can be a light as Jesus commanded us to be. When we are excellent in our work and in the things we produce, it puts us in great demand. The greater the demand on our lives, the greater the influence we have in society. The greater influence we have in society, the more we can share the truth of God’s word and His love of all people. Oftentimes, it simply starts with excelling.

There are many examples of this but one person that immediately comes to mind, considered to be the greatest closer in Major League Baseball history, is Mariano Rivera. Mo, as he is affectionately called, dominated at his position for nearly 19 years. He retired in 2013 at the top of his game and is held in high honor not only for how great of a pitcher he was but also for how great of person he is. He is very active in ministry work and he devotes a lot of his time to raising support for projects.

But as great of a person as he is, as devout of a Christian as he may be, the truth is that not too many people would care if he wasn’t great at what he did. His performance day in and day out on the mound gave him a platform to be esteemed off the field.

Today he is honored by many, not because he builds churches and schools in Panama, not because he is a Christian, but because he was the best closer that ever played the game. Because he excelled in his work, he has been brought before great and influential people who help echo his passion for Christ. That’s what it’s all about! Glorifying God with our lives often is done in us being great at what we do.

I pray that you would excel in all you do and that God would open doors for you to stand before great and influential people.

Love,

Ernst
