Virtuous woman

Day 31 of 31 Days of Wisdom

Congratulations! You walked with me through this wonderful book. I pray that as you are inspired you would feel free to look back and meditate on some of the wonderful things highlighted in this blog series. Today is our final day in Proverbs. I find it interesting that the first chapter begins with instruction from a father to a son and now the book ends with instruction from a mother to her son. King Lemuel’s mother gives him a stern warning about women, drinking, and perverting justice. She describes the woman that is fit for a king and asks this question:

“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.” Proverbs 31:10

She then lists various characteristics that a virtuous wife carries. She shares how she is industrious, devoted to her family, wise, kind, well spoken of, praised by her children, adored by her husband, and so much more. But rather than expound on every characteristic, I’ll focus on two of them as they sum it all up.

Verse 11:” The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.” And verse 28 which says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her”

These two stood out to me because a person’s true character is more easily confirmed by the people they live with. For a husband to trust his wife and for her children to rise up and call her blessed speaks volumes. It’s easy to look fabulous to people who don’t live with you. It’s easy to be celebrated by people who don’t know you intimately. But when people that see you everyday, know your habits and see you in your most vulnerable moments, can rise up and trust you and bless you, that is the true mark of a virtuous woman.

Ladies, you are an awesome treasure created by God. May your worth not be something people merely imagine it to be in their limited interaction with you. But rather let it be something confirmed by the people who know you best. May your inner beauty far exceed your outer. May your grace and wisdom exponentially increase. May all the characteristics of this virtuous woman we see in this chapter be said of you and may you enjoy all the favor that comes with it.

Love,

Ernst
